Sonic Liberation Devices is an on going series of open-source, hand-coded, decolonial musical instruments built from scratch. These instruments are not just sonic machines; they’re interventions. They reframe instruments as systems of care, resistance, protest, connection and storytelling.

Sonic Liberation Devices are Liberation Technology.

Liberation Technology is community-based technology that enables citizens to report news, expose wrongdoing, express opinions, mobilize protest, monitor elections, scrutinize the government, deepen participation, and expand the horizons of freedom.

Resistance doesn’t always look like protest anthems or viral posts. Sometimes, it looks like building a machine that makes joy accessible, or creating a sonic language when spoken words are censored and politically suppressed. In times of fascism, artists become essential infrastructure. We document what’s being erased. We imagine what’s being denied. Technology becomes more than a tool — it becomes a vessel for collective memory and a megaphone for the unheard.

Through coded instruments, encrypted messages, communal sound archives, and participatory design, we can create spaces that protect, amplify, and mobilize. Without the intention behind it, technological knowlegde just that: knowledge, and its important that we all remember how we can turn technology into Liberation Technology. The synergy between music and technology gives us flexibility and scale. It allows us to encode resistance into rhythm, stretch our work across borders and firewalls, and to remind people — even in the darkest moments — that sound can be a signal
